The large icicles start as 16mm clear borosilicate rod as well as the medium, it is then melted with color added and then twisted. Quality handmade icicles are flameworked with love and dedication to the craft, after each piece is shaped and melted in the flame it is placed in a kiln to be annealed relieving any stress in the glass and making it strong as possible. Borosilicate glass is not the same as regular lead glass it was made for chemistry and to be resistant to thermal shock and more durable and it is. However it is not break proof and will break if dropped on tile or cement.
